Open Source Software

toledoplusplus writes "The cost of specific hardware support and software licensing, costs for running administrative computers as well as computer labs for students can be high. Open source software is free, and if TPS *needed* external tech support they could go with Red Hat Linux.
Estimated Savings: $100,000: http://www.networkworld.com/weblogs/smb/2006/012953.html
The savings can be much greater, seeing that this article involves only 100 computers. The idea was raised for use in Toledo's government, but Larry Kaczala said the learning curve is too difficult to switch to open source.
Well, I encourage everyone to try Suse Linux. It has a graphical user interface for installation just like Windows, and it employs the KDE GUI Desktop interface that has striking similarities to Windows or Mac's.
Suse Linux is free.
OpenOffice (Office Suite) is free.
Firefox/Opera web browser is free.
Apache Web Server is free.
Children's learning games are free.
To anyone in TPS who would claim that this is too difficult to implement, I'll spend my free time teaching you myself.
